Alois Beyer, about 12 years ago, carrying home the cemetery cross from the churchyard in Gmund after setting up a proper gravestone. The history of Rosalie and Alois, the former servant on her farm, is a sad lovestory. A few years of happiness, then she fell ill. Alois nursed her over years in the old farmhouse until she finally past away after a long agony.

Today I visited Alois Beyer, a good friend and also a distant relative. More than ten years ago I already spent a few days with him in his wonderful old farmhouse, situated on a hill and surrounded by woods, near the major district town Miesbach in Bavaria. Things have changed in the last years, on the parcel now stands a newly constructed building, Alois, who is living alone since the death of his wife in the late nineties, is invalid and lonely, the new neighbours cleaned up the courtyard, cut the trees and removed the gravestone in memory of his wife Rosalie where he used to pray. Alois gave over the farm to his close friend, the farmer next of his property – with a life annuity contract, a tradition still alive in the 21st century in this region – one hot meal per day until the day he dies. The life of Alois is eventful and tragic, I love his never ending stories and his joy for every little gesture…

Almost every day I read something about photography it seems to me that in most cases, these writings don´t say nothing about the most simple thing, the nature of photography itself. They don´t say what photography is, perhaps they think that everybody already knows or should know... They don´t talk about the strange feelings some pictures may evoque, they don´t talk about simple things transported in all kind of photographs, they don´t talk about happiness or sadness, about surprise or complicity... Photography can be hard and direct, it also can be full of confusion, ambiguity and paradox simultanities, it is not essential in itself, like language or philosophy, but all matters expressed by or through photography can be and will be, depending on the view of the spectator.

The Myth of Mount Triglav

Last week I had the opportunity to realize a photo essay around the myth of Mount Triglav in Slovenia. The Triglav is the highest peak of Slovenia and the Julian Alps. Its name. The “Three-headed” is surrounded by a complex mythology. Triglav is an ancient Slavic deity, often described as a man with three heads, representing the three kingdoms: heaven, earth and the underworld. There are many legends, one of the most popular is the tale of Zlatorog, the golden-horned chamois, mortally wounded by a young Slovenian hunter. Out of his blood grew beautiful red roses. Before the hunter found Zlatorog, he ate some of these flowers and was instantly healed. The approaching hunter in the end was blinded by the light from Zlatorog´s golden horns and fell of a cliff… But mount Triglav is not only important in legends and mythology, in recent history the mountain became a political and national symbol and is omnipresent in the life of all Slovenes. On Thursday, february 10, 2011, A forgotten promise stops at the publishing house and library Traficantes de Sueños in c/Embajadores, 35 in Madrid, Spain. Some information in advance: during the Kosovo War in 1999 the Kosovo Liberation Army expelled tenthousands of Roma from their Kosovo homeland, forcing them to take refuge in Serbia or, in the case of Mitrovica, in the northern part oft he city, mainly populated with serbs. After the war, they called not return to their destroyed neighbourhood in southern Mitrovica, the Roma Mahalla, an das IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) they were settled by the UNMIK administration on the slack sleaps of the Trepca lead mines, a highly polluted area, some called it the major environmental disaster in Europe. But the already discriminated Roma suffered from more than just the dramatic effects of social exclusion, for more than a decade they are forced to live, to birth and to bring up their children and, of course, to die, in lead-poisened air and on lead-poisened soil, drinking poisoned water. Yet, in 2011, there is no hope and still there is no one who feels responsible, nor the local administration, neither the United Nations itself. A forgotten promise is just a glimpse into the suffering and the difficulties of daily life of more than 600 people living in the camps of Osterode and Cesmin Lug in Mitrovica, Northern Kosovo.

Talking to elderly people near the village i spend most of my time in Spain I noticed that almost everybody has worked abroad, in Germany or Switzerland, for some years. The experiences they made interested me from the beginning, perhaps this could be a nice portrait project for the near future... In recent history, poverty of rural Spain after the civil war led to a shift in population as hundreds of thousands of Spaniards moved out of the poor south and west in search of jobs and a better way of life. Between 1950 and 1980, more than 5 million Spaniards left the country, first for the prosperous economies of France and the Federal Republic of Germany, then for the industrial regions of Spain itself.

Seseña - where the streets have no name

Building cranes, remainings of construction activities, empty, muddy spaces and wet asphalt: this is the aspect oft he macro urbanization called after ist promoter Francisco Hernando or Paco El Pocero near the town of Seseña, in the province of Toledo, only about 40 kilometers south of Madrid. After passing a pompous monument dedicated to this building tycoon the visitor enters a ghost town. The shutters of most oft he more than 6.000 flats are closed since the construction oft he buildings, in most oft hem never lived anybody, a boy passing the street with his dog, talking with his cell phone, produces an almost irreal echoe and feels almost as an unsettling and weird presence… Behind of this sad monument to speculation made of concrete and steel, another example for mismanagement and greed: over 10 acres of soil covered with old car tyres, more than 30.000 tons of rubber, supposed to be recycled, someday or somehow. Now it is known as the „black sea“, a stinking ocean separating Seseña and Valdemoro…

Leonhard of Limoges, whose saint´s day is 6th of november, was a franconian noble and lived at the court of the Merovingians before he left his home and dedicated his life to christianity. In rural and alpine areas of Europe he is one of the most venerated saints, known above all as the patron saint for convicts and for cattle and horses. As in many bavarian villages in Schliersee most families participate in this old tradition. Women and girls put on their traditional costumes and their herited family jewellery, men and boys deck out horses with shining harnesses and adorn them with flowers and ribbons. Sitting on the carts or riding on horseback the faithful pray until they reach the pilgrimage church where all participants, men and animals, receive the blessing of the priest…

Eduardo Ochoa for me transmits with his photographs his free and romantic spirit, but always in a disquieting and unsettling perspective. He seems to be an invader in a menacing and arcane environment, despite of all the traces and signs with which human beings transformed and marked the landscapes of Eduardo Ochoa. In Looking for Ataraxia you will discover landscape photography full of energy, electric landscapes, always in a dificult but obvious balance between calm and restlessness. The photographs are like cages containing a high potential of energy, always about to break up their prison, the prisons in which Ochoa locked them up and where all elements, material and inexistent, the vacuum, lights and shadows, are fusing into a new reality. The images of Looking for Ataraxia are reflections about the esencial, they are almost existential landscapes.

Sierra de Gredos is a hiking paradise! The mountains continue the line of the Sierra de Guadarrama, enclosing Madrid tot he north and tot he west. Peaks like the Almanzor rise over 2500 m, by far the best trekking area in central Spain, including some climbing and high-level routes across passes and sierras. Bath in the crystalline water of the innumerable gargantas, small alpine brooks joining river Tormes down in the eponymous valley, or visit medieval castles and churches like San Martin in Bonilla de la Sierra, the former summer residence of the bishops of the diocesis of Ávila. Frischling is a new magazine full of information and news about the rural areas south of Munich. Tanja Attlfellner and Lina Homann presented this project at the Premium Bonus Schau x 5 in the Alte Kongresshalle in Munich as their finish of their academic formation at the Deutsche Meisterschule für Mode with specialization in arts and graphics. I am proud to be a part of this project with a set of pictures called "Fußball in Bildern" that I produced for the TSV Schliersee during the annual Indoor Soccer Cup in Hausham! Good luck! From Germany to Hungary and back

Babette Steiner´s room in an old age asylum in Neuhaus, Bavaria, with a picture of her son, Georg Steiner. In their lifes they had to cross many frontieres. Babettes life seemed to be star-crossed from the very beginning in a little flat in Munich, her family never put much hope in the weak, rachitic girl, born a few month after the end of The Great War. Later she moved to a village with her husband who died a few years after. Her only son Georg lost his job as a telecomunication repairman suffering from herniated disc problems and heavy allergic rashes. After a time the only way he saw to deal with severe depression and growing alcohol problems, he spent the rest of his pay-off on a little house between the austro-hungarian border and Lake Balaton. Soon the money was wasted, maintaining the house and looking after his ill and impoverished mother lead to his total ruin. Today he is working ocassionally in a junkyard to get some cash to visit sometimes his now run-down house, once his liftime dream and the only hope to leave behind a miserable life.

Some pictures made during my road trip through Thüringen in the last days, searching for remainings of the border between the FRG and the GDR. They show the bearer of the lottery wheel at a trade fair in Schmalkalden, the highway A4 near Point Alpha, the inter-German grenzland between Hessen and Thüringen, a small recreation settlement near the spa town of Bad Salzungen and a sowjet war graves memorial in Herleshausen.

From april to june we organize for the first time a photography course for the art students at the Freie Kunstwerkstatt München. The workshop consists of 6 units and is aimed to be a comprehensive class about the fundamentals of photography: history of photography, camera technique, different approaches to photography and topics… Students will be be trained on both digital and film-based cameras.
