some months ago I visited the memorial site at Oświęcim (Ausschwitz) in Poland. I shot some pictures of the floor and the walls, everything kept as it had been during the years of terror and genocide. Soon I will place them on my website, here are only a few of them...

Living on the edge

Last week I met a group of men and homeless children living in and around a cementery in Larache, Morocco. The children are collecting water bottles and other stuff from the rubbish dump which is covering the southern part of the highcoast and the beaches of this at first sight charming little city at the Atlantic coast. Abdullah, who cannot stop inflicting pain to himself, and his friends are living in the mausoleums for several years now...

With Ara Güler in Istanbul

First I thought it was one of the typical empty phrases in my travel guide, but just in the moment I ordered a cup of turkish coffee in Café Ara, near Istlikal Caddesi in Beyoglu, Ara Güler, the world famous Magnum photographer and chronicler of his hometown himself saluted the waiter in this crowded coffee shop for which he lent his name. Franz Gsellmann´s World Machine

Check out some pictures of Franz Gsellmanns World Machine in Knaab, a little village in Styria, Austria, published in the new issue of Alps Magazin. Franz Gsellmann was inspired by a photograph of the Atomium of the Universal Exhibition of 1958 in Brussels published in the local press and the next day he travelled to Belgium. Back at home he started to build the "world machine", collecting all kind of pieces, household items, toys, statues of saints, different kind of engines and so on... Now, more than 30 years after his death in 1981, his grandson, Franz Gsellmann Jr., is maintaining the machine, searching for spare parts all over the world: http://www.alps-magazine.com http://www.weltmaschine.at

Vienna and Melk...

It´s been a long time since I posted something on this blog. Yesterday I came back from a kind of research trip to Vienna and some other places in Upper Austria, including visits to the headquarters of the UN organisations, to Kaisermühlen (public housing areas, built in the Twenties and Thirties of the 20th century in Vienna) and to some villages by the Danube near the city of Melk. This has to be reason enough to show some photographs from the last five days...

Situation at Puerta de Hierro is deteriorating

The situation at the settlement of Puera de Hierro in Madrid is deteriorating after the last actions of demolition on july 17th. Exhibition Puerta de Hierro, Madrid

Organized by the Commission of Social Issues of the Popular Assembly of Moncloa, the people still living at Puerta de Hierro invite interessted people to visit their homes and see some of my photographs. Two weeks ago, I heard yesterday, another house has been demolished at Puerta de Hierro, where many families already leave in very bad conditions. All the best to my friends Mila,, Antonio, Carmen, Mari Carmen, Merche and all of you who offered your generous hospitality to me during my stay at your homes. Stay strong!
